Muslim and Greeks at Hutt Street Centre

Minister Grace Portolesi MP and SAMEAC Chairman Hieu Van Le AO joined the Muslim and Greek communities at the Hutt Street Centre to have lunch with Adelaide’s homeless and hungry on 17 November 2010.

The Muslim community was celebrating ‘Eid ul-Adha’, with the Multicultural Sports and Community Club providing the lamb and the Greek Orthodox Community cooking the lamb.
Eid Ul-Adha is a significant holy day for Muslims and many members of the Multicultural Sports and Social Club are Muslims.
The background to the holy day is:
• God asked the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isma’il.
• Prophet Abraham was about to sacrifice his son, when God stopped him and provided Prophet Abraham with a sheep to kill instead of his son.
• To commemorate Prophet Abraham’s act of obedience, Muslims around the world sacrifice an animal and share it with family, friends, neighbours and people who need assistance.
