International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
|Event Name||International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination|
|Start Date||21st Mar 2017 12:00am|
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March. On that day in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful anti-apartheid demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa. Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
In 1999, 21 March also became known as Harmony day in Australia. For more information about Harmony Day, including events happening locally, visit http://www.harmony.gov.au/.
