The festival of Wesak (Vesak, Sandskrit Vaishakha or Pali Vesakha), observed as a public holiday in most south east Asian countries, is the most important of the Theravada Buddhist festivals, commemorating the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha. Observed on the full moon of the lunar month, Vesakha, is marked mainly by devotional services such as the pouring of water over the shoulders of Buddha statues in a symbolic gesture of purification.
