Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most important day in the Jewish calendar. Called "the Sabbath of Sabbaths" in the Bible, it occurs 10 days after Rosh Hasanah (New Year). In biblical times, it was the only day in the year when the high priest went into the inner sanctum of the Temple, and spoke the otherwise unspoken name of God. Today, Jews dress in white, refrain from wearing leather, fast for 25 hours and pray for fogiveness.
